PORTABLE BARRIERS SENT TO HELP IN QUEENSLAND FLOODS
The Rudd Government is transporting temporary flood barriers from New South Wales to Queensland to help protect homes in the path of rising flood waters.
Attorney-General Robert McClelland has approved Emergency Management Australia (EMA) to coordinate the delivery of the portable barriers and personnel to the western Queensland town of Charleville.
“EMA’s Incident Management Facility in Canberra has activated the Rudd Government’s Disaster Response Plan as a result of a request for assistance from the Queensland Government,” Mr McClelland said.
“The Rudd Government stands ready to assist Queensland at this difficult time.”
The town of Charleville has an incomplete levee system and the portable barriers will be used to bridge the gap and assist to minimize the potential impact of rising flood waters.
The portable flood barriers will be transported into Charleville by Defence aircraft from Wollongong in New South Wales.
“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the NSW Government for their quick action in supplying the barriers and the SES personnel,” Member for Flynn Chris Trevor said.
“Local families and small businesses are very grateful for this support at what is a very difficult time.”
“On behalf of all local families I would also like to acknowledge the grand efforts of the SES and other volunteers who are working around the clock, away from their families and loved ones.”
