$3 MILLION FOR FLOOD PROTECTION IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The Federal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland today announced joint funding of almost $3 million to further upgrade flood protection works across the State.
Mr McClelland said that the Commonwealth’s $1 million contribution is being matched by the South Australian Government and local councils.
“This funding supports communities before floods occur, helping put in place infrastructure that has the potential to protect lives, homes, and businesses,” Mr McClelland said.
“The Rudd Government recognises that early intervention such as this helps reduce the social and economic hardships that can take place if floods do hit.”
The joint funding will enable communities to reduce future property damage and the threat to lives, as well as reducing the distress and disruption experienced in times of flood.
“A major project will provide an integrated flood drainage network in Loxton South by linking and enlarging three existing stormwater storage basins, and minimising overland flows,” Mr McClelland said.
“Additional funding is being provided to the City of Salisbury for works on the Burton West Drainage Network to take account of the substantial service alterations required by Telstra and SA Water. Further projects in Murray Bridge and Victor Harbor will help to address deficiencies in flood protection for those communities.”
