COMMONWEALTH PROVIDES OVER $4 MILLION IN BUSHFIRE MITIGATION FUNDING TO STATES & TERRITORIES
6 May 2009
Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, today announced that the Commonwealth will provide more than $4 million to the States and Territories through the Bushfire Mitigation Program.
The Bushfire Mitigation Program is a cooperative program with funding from Local, State, Territory and Commonwealth governments. It is administered by the Attorney‑General’s Department and aims to assist communities to better prepare for, respond to and withstand the effects of bushfires.
“The severe, prolonged and tragic fire season experienced in Australia this year clearly demonstrates that investment in effective bushfire mitigation is important in reducing the human and economic cost of bushfires,” Mr McClelland said.
Allocations for this financial year, based on submissions received from State and Territory Governments, include:
- New South Wales: $1.352 million
- Victoria: $0.965 million
- Queensland: $0.622 million
- Western Australia: $0.550 million
- South Australia: $0.425 million
- Tasmania: $0.275 million
- Australian Capital Territory: $0.195 million
- Northern Territory: $0.05 million
“Natural disasters, including bushfires, cause more than $1 billion damage each year, along with serious disruption to communities,” Mr McClelland said.
