COMMONWEALTH ASSISTANCE FOR FLOOD AFFECTED QUEENSLAND COMMUNITIES

8 January 2010

Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, today announced the Commonwealth Government will provide financial support to the Queensland Government to assist with costs associated with helping communities in Central and South West Queensland impacted by recent heavy rain and flooding.

Commonwealth support is being provided to the Queensland Government through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. This assistance will reimburse the state of Queensland for a share of the costs associated with helping flood affected communities to rebuild damaged public infrastructure.

Under the Arrangements, local government areas of Balonne, Barcaldine, Barcoo, Blackall-Tambo, Bulloo, Longreach, Maranoa, Murweh, Paroo, Quilpie, Richmond and Winton will be able to access funding for costs associated with restoring essential public assets as well as the cost associated with counter disaster operations.

The Commonwealth, through Emergency Management Australia, will continue to work closely with Queensland authorities to ensure that affected communities have all the support they need during this difficult period.
