SELF RELIANCE RECOGNISED IN SAFER COMMUNITIES AWARDS
Attorney-General Robert McClelland has today praised projects from across Australia, which help the public to be better prepared for emergencies.
"Presenting these national awards at this particular time is very relevant considering the fantastic effort by emergency services workers in responding to the Queensland and New South Wales floods," said Mr McClelland.
"When the goal is making our communities safer, emergency management excellence is essential. Preparedness and self-reliance are worthy skills to encourage and reward."
The Australian Safer Communities Awards were presented to thirteen recipients from both government and non-government organisations.
The joint winners of the 'Projects of National Significance' Pre-Disaster category were the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia and Geoscience Australia, for their research partnership examining the risks of tsunami on the WA coastline.
Other winners included St John Ambulance Australia, Australian Red Cross, and Surf Life Saving Australia.
Many entries were the result of combined and cooperative efforts to find solutions to emergency management challenges.
The awards were presented jointly by Attorney-General Robert McClelland and the Minister for Home Affairs Bob Debus.
It's the eighth year that the awards - organised by Emergency Management Australia, a division of the Attorney-General's Department - have been presented.
