Additional part-time member appointed to support the review of the family law system

Media release

I have appointed Dr Andrew Bickerdike as a part-time commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC).

Dr Bickerdike will support Professor Rhoades who is leading the comprehensive review of the family law system. The review is well underway and is due report to Government in March 2019.

Dr Bickerdike has had a distinguished career within the family law sector and will bring significant experience and expertise to the ALRC review, particularly in the areas of dispute resolution and family support services.

Dr Bickerdike is the Chief Executive Officer of Relationships Australia Victoria. He is also the National Board Chair of Relationships Australia, a Director of the Mediation Standards Board and Board Member of the Australian Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. Dr Bickerdike has a Doctorate in dispute resolution and has practiced for over 20 years as a mediator and family dispute resolution practitioner.

The ALRC received over 400 submissions in response to its Issues Paper released in March 2018. The ALRC will continue to consult widely across the community as it identifies reforms to the family law system that are necessary to meet the needs of Australian families into the future. I strongly encourage past and present users of the system to participate in the review.

More information on the review of the family law system is available from the ALRC website.
