Appointments to Administrative Appeals Tribunal

Media release

I am pleased to announce the appointment of five judges of the Federal Court of Australia who will hold dual appointments as Deputy Presidents of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Federal Court judges are appointed to the Tribunal to hear more legally complex matters before the Tribunal, where their expertise is required.

The Government has appointed the following judges:

  • The Hon Justice Craig Colvin
  • The Hon Justice Neil McKerracher
  • The Hon Justice Melissa Perry
  • The Hon Justice Simon Steward
  • The Hon Justice Thomas Thawley

All of the judges are eminent individuals who have had distinguished careers in the legal profession. They will provide the Tribunal with significant expertise on a range of subject matters.

Where permitted, each judge has been appointed for a period of seven years. Justice McKerracher has been appointed until 5 December 2021, at which time he will attain 70 years of age and his appointment as a judge will cease.

On behalf of the Government, I would like to congratulate and thank the judges for their willingness to be appointed to the Tribunal and I look forward to the contribution they will make.
