Today, I am pleased to announce the appointment of two judges to the Federal Circuit Court of Australia: Mr Terry Betts to the Newcastle Registry and Mr Bruce Smith to the Sydney Registry.
Mr Betts will commence in the Newcastle Registry on 30 May, 2018. Mr Betts graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from James Cook University in 1993 and was admitted as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1995. He commenced his career as an articled clerk at Nehmer Davenport Dean McKee.
Mr Betts worked as an associate to the Hon Justice Keiran Cullinane AM of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1994 before commencing as a solicitor at Arthur Browne & Associates. He joined the Queensland Bar in 2001 and specialised in and gained extensive experience in family law. Mr Betts joined the Newcastle Bar in 2015 and has continued his focus on family law matters.
Mr Smith will commence in the Sydney Registry on 12 June 2018. Mr Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Sydney in 1991. He was admitted as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales (NSW) in 1993. Mr Smith began his career as an associate to the late Hon Justice Rex Smart of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1993.
Following his associateship, Mr Smith worked as a solicitor at Sparke Helmore Solicitors. He then joined the NSW Bar in 1998, where he gained extensive experience in family law, personal injury, insurance, professional negligence, property damage, and coronial inquiries matters.
