I am pleased to announce the appointment of the Hon Justice John Alexander Logan and the Hon Justice Melissa Anne Perry to the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal (the Tribunal).
The Tribunal hears and determines appeals from courts martial and Defence Force magistrates relating to service offences by Australian Defence Force personnel.
Both appointments are for five years and will commence on 27 September 2018.
The Hon Justice John Alexander Logan RFD has been appointed as President of the Tribunal.
Justice Logan has been the Deputy President of the Tribunal since 2015. He is currently a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and was first appointed as a member of the Tribunal in 2011. Justice Logan became a commissioned officer in the Australian Intelligence Corps of the Australian Army in 1976, holding the rank of Major and has been on the Standby List in the Australian Intelligence Corps, Australian Army Reserve, since 1993. Justice Logan was awarded the Reserve Force Decoration in 1993 in respect of his military service.
Justice Logan replaces the Hon Richard Tracey AM RFD QC as President of the Tribunal, who has retired from the judiciary.
The Hon Justice Melissa Anne Perry has been appointed as a member of the Tribunal.
Justice Perry is also a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 2004. Since 2011, she has served as a Squadron Leader with the Royal Australian Air Force, Legal Specialist Reserves. Her previous positions include being a barrister and a member of the Administrative Review Council.
