Today I am pleased to announce the terms of reference for the reviews of the National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services 2015-20 and the Indigenous Legal Assistance Program.
The Australian Government is committed to improving access to justice for disadvantaged people and maximising the delivery of legal assistance services within available resources.
The reviews will commence in early June 2018 and will be conducted in parallel. The reviews are expected to be completed in December 2018 and will help inform future funding arrangements for legal assistance services beyond 30 June 2020.
These reviews will assess the effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness of the National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services 2015-20 and the Indigenous Legal Assistance Program as mechanisms for achieving their respective objectives and outcomes within available resources, and identify best practice and opportunities for improvement.
The terms of reference for the review of the National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services 2015-20 have also been agreed by my state and territory ministerial counterparts, as parties to the Agreement.
The legal assistance sector, through state and territory government departments and their national legal assistance sector peak bodies, have been consulted during the development of the terms of reference. The legal assistance sector will continue to have a high level of engagement in the reviews through formal governance arrangements established for the reviews and through direct consultation undertaken by the Independent Reviewers.
