Congratulations to Man Booker Prize winner
15 October 2014
I extend my warmest congratulations to Australian author, Richard Flanagan on being awarded the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2014 for his most recent novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
Published in 2013 to great acclaim by Australian publishers Vintage Books, The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a story about the many forms of love and death, as one man comes of age, prospers, only to discover all that he has lost. Richard's father was a survivor of the Burma Death Railway and it is this family history that inspired his book.
The Man Booker Prize for fiction is greeted with great anticipation and fanfare. The prize is awarded each year for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the UK. The winner is assured renown and success. Richard's book will now assume a place of great significance in the international book industry.
This accolade recognises not only Richard's wonderful writing and imagination, but is a reflection of the quality of Australian literature.
Australians will be immensely proud of Richard's achievement. He will join Man Booker Prize winners Peter Carey, Thomas Keneally and Australian-born DBC Pierre in putting Australian writing on the world stage through this prestigious accolade.
