Communiqué: Native Title Ministers' Meeting
16 December 2014
Commonwealth, state and territory ministers responsible for native title met in Brisbane today to continue discussions about improving the native title system. The meeting followed upon the decision of ministers in Darwin in August this year to renew discussions about the operation of the Native Title Act.
Native title ministers confirmed their commitment to work cooperatively to improve the native title system to the benefit of native title holders, Indigenous people, land owners, local communities and other stakeholders. Ministers discussed opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the native title system.
Ministers acknowledged the establishment on 10 October 2014 of a COAG Investigation into Indigenous land use and land administration that will report to COAG at its first meeting in 2015. Ministers agreed to provide a range of proposals to the COAG Investigation for its consideration in the first half of 2015.
Ministers agreed to meet again in the first half of 2015 to work with the COAG Investigation in order to progress these proposals.
Ministers also considered the future of financial arrangements in respect of native title between the Commonwealth and the states and territories. The matter will be further discussed in the coming year.
