Appointment to the Federal Court of Australia

14 April 2014

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Jacqueline Sarah Gleeson SC as a Judge to the Federal Court of Australia.

Ms Gleeson will be appointed to the Sydney registry of the Federal Court and will fill the vacancy left on the retirement of the Hon Justice Dennis Cowdroy OAM on 15 March 2014.

I congratulate Ms Gleeson on her appointment. She has enjoyed an illustrious career at the Bar, and has served both in private practice and as a government lawyer.

Ms Gleeson began practice at the New South Wales Bar on 26 August 1991. She left the bar in 2000 to practise as a solicitor with the Australian Broadcasting Authority, then the Australian Government Solicitor, before returning to the bar in 2007. Her principal areas of practice have been administrative law, competition and consumer law, professional liability and taxation law. She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2012.

Ms Gleeson has served both as a member of the Bar Council and as a member of a professional conduct committee of the New South Wales Bar Association between 1997 and 2000.

Ms Gleeson's appointment will commence on 15 April 2014.
