Appointment to the Family Court of Australia

I am pleased to announce that Judge Terrence McGuire has been appointed as a judge of the Family Court of Australia. Judge McGuire has been appointed to the Hobart registry and will commence on 22 May 2021 following the retirement of Justice Robert Benjamin. The appointment of Judge McGuire elevates him from his current position as a judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia (FCC).

Judge McGuire was admitted to the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1985 and has been a judge of the FCC since 2008.

On behalf of the Australian Government, I congratulate Judge McGuire on his appointment and thank him for his willingness to continue to serve the people of Australia as a judge of the Family Court of Australia.

Judge Terrence McGuire

Judge McGuire graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws in 1981 and 1984, respectively. He was admitted to the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1985 following an apprenticeship at the firm Fuller & Stace. From 1985 to 1995, Judge McGuire practised as a barrister and solicitor at Tasmanian firms Doolan & Brothers, James Crotty, and Piggott, Wood & Baker. From 1995 he practised as a partner at Temple-Smith Partners in Hobart, and was later appointed as a judge of the FCC in 2008 where he has predominantly heard family law matters in the Launceston registry.

During his career, Judge McGuire was also admitted as a practitioner to the Federal Court of the United States of America, admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Victoria and attained a Certificate IV in mediation.
