Appointment to the Federal Circuit Court of Australia

I am pleased to announce that Senior Registrar Colin Campbell, Ms Jennifer Howe and Mr Jonathan Davis QC have been appointed as judges of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia (FCC), commencing 6 April 2021.

Senior Registrar Colin Campbell will commence in the Sydney Registry on 6 April 2021. He was admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1986 and commenced his career as a solicitor at Vaughan Hains and Main in 1987. In 2005 he was appointed as a Registrar of the Family Court of Australia and FCC, and was appointed as a Senior Registrar in 2020.

Mr Jonathan Davis QC will commence in the Melbourne registry on 6 April 2021. He was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1991. Mr Davis began his career as a solicitor in 1991 and since then has specialised in commercial practice, including insurance law and professional liability, corporations law, competition and consumer law, and contractual disputes.

Ms Jennifer Howe will commence in the Melbourne registry on 6 April 2021. She was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2005 and commenced her legal career in 2005 as a solicitor at Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper). Ms Howe specialises in family law and family violence. She has extensive experience appearing on behalf of Independent Children's Lawyers and uses her experience in corporate and insolvency law to resolve complex property matters.

On behalf of the Australian Government, I congratulate Senior Registrar Colin Campbell, Mr Jonathan Davis QC and Ms Jennifer Howe on their appointments and thank them for their willingness to serve the people of Australia as judges of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia.

Senior Registrar Colin Campbell

Senior Registrar Campbell graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts from Macquarie University in 1986, and later with a Master of Laws (Hons) majoring in dispute resolution from the University of Technology Sydney in 2009.

He was a solicitor at Vaughan Hains and Main in 1987, before practising as a solicitor at Morton and Harris in 1988 where he became an equity partner in 1991. From 2005 to the present, Senior Registrar Campbell has held positions as a Registrar and Senior Registrar in the Federal Circuit Court and the Family Court of Australia.

During his time in private practice and at the federal courts, Senior Registrar Campbell served from 1995 to 2015 in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve as a Legal Officer (Lieutenant Commander). He has delivered many papers, seminars and workshops on family law generally, and on practice and procedure in the family law courts.

Mr Jonathan Davis QC

Mr Davis graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne in 1989.

He began his career as an articled clerk and later a solicitor at Corrs Chambers Westgarth in 1990 before being called to the Bar in 1993 and appointed silk in 2015. Mr Davis has extensive experience as an advocate, at trial and on appeal. In addition to his extensive experience in commercial law, Mr Davis has also practised in administrative law, industrial relations, equity, and trusts.

Ms Jennifer Howe

Ms Howe graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws (International Business Law) from La Trobe University in 2004 and 2005 respectively

She practised as a solicitor advocate in the Family Violence Pilot Program at the Heidelberg Magistrates' Court from 2006, before being called to the Bar in 2010. Ms Howe has extensive experience working in family law and family violence law. Furthermore, since 2010 Ms Howe has also been a part time Lecturer and Tutor in Ethics and Family Law at the Leo Cussen Institute and since 2017 has been a Secretary of the Victorian Family Law Bar Association.
