Reappointment of Sex Discrimination Commissioner and Age Discrimination Commissioner

Media Release

Attorney-General Michaelia Cash congratulates Ms Kate Jenkins and the Hon Dr Kay Patterson AO on their reappointment as Commissioners of the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Ms Jenkins was today reappointed as the Sex Discrimination Commissioner and Dr Patterson as the Age Discrimination Commissioner. The two year reappointments will enable the Commissioners to continue their important work at the Commission.

Ms Jenkins has led a number of projects at the Commission, including the Commission's collaborative project on cultural reform within the Australian Defence Force and the world‑first National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces, culminating in the Respect@Work report.

Ms Jenkins will continue to support the Government’s implementation of the report’s recommendations, including as Chair of the Respect@Work Council established by the Government. She is also leading the independent inquiry into Commonwealth Parliamentary workplaces that was announced by the Government on 5 March 2021 and is due to report by November 2021.

Dr Patterson has been focusing on the rights of older workers, elder abuse, and risk of homelessness amongst older Australians. Dr Patterson is running several projects in the area of older workers, implementing recommendations from the Commission’s Willing to Work: National Inquiry into Employment Discrimination Against Older Australians and Australians with Disability report. Additionally, she is working with various stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to assist the rapidly growing group of older women facing homelessness, and to implement recommendations from the Australian Law Reform Commission report, Elder Abuse — A National Legal Response and the priorities outlined in the National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians.

Continuity in this role is important at this time as the Government considers the final report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
