Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department

Media Release

I congratulate Ms Katherine Jones PSM on her appointment as the Secretary of the Attorney‑General’s Department.

Ms Jones brings a wealth of skills to the role, including an in-depth understanding of this portfolio and significant experience across the Australian Public Service.

This includes her most recent role as Associate Secretary at the Department of Defence, and previously the Chief Operating Officer at the Department of Finance.

Notably, Ms Jones started her public service career as a graduate in the Attorney-General’s Department, working for 17 years across various portfolio areas, including national security and emergency management, for which she was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2017.

Ms Jones will be the first female Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department in its 120 year history.

I look forward to working with Ms Jones to deliver on the government’s commitments, to facilitate job growth through our industrial relations policy work, and to maintain and improve Australia’s legal and justice framework.

I also acknowledge the work of Mr Iain Anderson who has been acting in the Secretary role since the start of the year.

I would like to thank Mr Anderson for his excellent support and unwavering dedication in leading the department over a very busy period. This has included progressing a number of key government priorities in areas such as the response to the Respect@Work report and significant work in the areas of family law reform, industrial relations, workplace health and safety and national security.

Ms Jones will commence in the role on 16 August 2021.
